Schools and Events

The children really enjoyed your visit. They were so excited to meet you. Some of my class have brought in books yesterday and today from home to read. I know you have really inspired them. Once again many thanks for coming into school. It was an amazing experience. Penygarn School, Pontypool
Just a short email to say thank you for yesterday from myself, Julie & Year 7.  Another successful and productive lesson.  I’m looking forwarding to seeing some of their imaginative stories. St Cenydd Community School, Caerphilly
Thank you so much for a truly wonderful day. The feedback I have had from my colleagues has all been absolutely glowing and the children haven’t stopped talking about what a fantastic time they had.  They are all very enthusiastic about reading the book and finding out more about your characters. Resources

My children’s events are suitable for ages 8-12. My fees are in line with The Society of Authors’ guidelines and depend on what’s required but expect around £150 plus travel costs for a half day.

Here are some examples of what I can do for you.

Author talk

1 hour, suitable for assembly hall, classroom, library, festival and anything else!

When I was a child I loved books but I didn’t know a career as an author was even possible. I will talk about how my dream of becoming a writer took shape, how my first book came about and what it’s like to work with a publisher. Along the way I’ll give lots of tips on developing story ideas, chat about favourite books and involve the audience in some improvised story-telling and maybe a poetry duel or two. There will be time at the end for questions, and I’m always happy to add in time for book-signing.

Powerpoint facilities are useful, though not essential.

Heroes and Villains Workshop

1 hour, suitable for classroom or small group. Maximum 50 children.

Great stories start with great characters. Discover what every hero wants, what every villain hates, and invent your own nefarious plans for world domination in this interactive workshop.

I will talk the class through creating characters and show how stories evolve naturally out of characters. There will be plenty of time for group work for the children to invent their own heroes and villains and share the results.

Worksheets will be provided. All I require is a whiteboard or flipchart.

Dragon Island Workshop

1 hour, suitable for classroom or small group. Maximum 50 children.

Writing a story is a bit like landing on a strange new island. You might have an idea for a character or two, and some idea of where you’re starting from, but there’s a lot that you don’t know until you start exploring.

Complementing the hero and villains workshop, this one looks at creating settings for your stories. If you could go anywhere in the world, where would it be? Or would you prefer to invent your own world?

In this workshop, children will work in groups and individually to create their own maps and develop a story outline from start to finish.

Worksheets will be provided. All I require is a whiteboard or flipchart.

Half day and full day visits

In addition to the above, I can offer half and full day school visits combining workshops and talks with fun, storytelling games and activities. Contact me for details.

For Adult Audiences

My author’s talk can easily be adapted for an adult audience. I also run writing workshops and critique sessions for adults – contact me for details.
